Who are all these weird people wearing funny clothing?
We are members of the Society for Creative Anachronism, or the SCA. The SCA is devoted to recreating life as it was lived throughout the middle ages--the general rule of thumb is that if you're interested in it, odds are someone is researching it. Though we don't eschew modern technology (ah, indoor plumbing!), our members research (and in many cases recreate) just about any facet of medieval times you could fathom.
Interested in learning to fight with sword and shield? Come and join the lists, where you can fight in gigantic tournaments and earn honor on the battlefield. Storytelling? Bardic circles are held throughout the year, where the only price of entry is to share a story or song. What about food and drink? From baking bread to brewing your own ales, there are plenty of people willing to share their knowledge. Wearing the clothing of the period, or garb, is another way to help add to the overall feeling of having stepped backwards in time.
(This is just a short introduction to the SCA: For more information on our origins and interests, see the About page!)
Sounds interesting. Okay, so I'm interested in the SCA. What do I need to do first?
Not much at all! There's a lot to do in the SCA, and you can do as much or as little as you want. Get your feet wet by coming to one of our weekly practices to meet people and dabble. At practice you'll find heavy weapons fighting, fencing, and Arts & Sciences classes, as well as SCAdians young and old. (Some of our members have been coming to Unicorn practices since their days at Miami!) Unicorn is fairly low-key, so no worries that everybody will suddenly be bowing to the pointy-heads while you stand around feeling awkward. Come and talk to us!
Wait. Pointy-heads?
You'll hear "pointy-heads" used to refer to the people who wear different crowns, coronets, or circlets when in medieval garb. Just like in period, the SCA has kings and queens, princes and princesses, and all sorts of other nobility you might run into. (The current Prince and Princess of the Middle Kingdom are from the Dayton area!) For the most part, though, you won't see them unless you go to a larger event or practice.
Oh. Okay. So I just show up?
That's right! Come and see us on Mondays at 7:00 PM.
What about this garb thing? Do I need to dress up to go?
Nope! Though fighters have to wear protective clothing, most members come to meetings in normal street clothing. If you're looking to fight, we've got loaner gear you can use to try it out. Don't worry if you don't have anything of your own straightaway! Many branches of the SCA, ours included, have loaner garb known as Gold Key to borrow. If you choose to go to any larger events before making any garb of your own, we've got you covered. (Literally.)
Is there anybody I can talk to prior to going?
Of course! If you'd like to talk to any current members of Unicorn, feel free to either contact any of the officers, or say hi on the Unicorn or baronial Facebook page--there's always somebody willing to chat!
